Market Update
Turkish-origin red lentil prices have risen 18–22% over the past 90 days, from USD 580/MT to USD 685–710/MT FOB Mersin. This marks the highest price level since the 2021 global pulses supply crisis.
Supply-Side Pressures
Southeastern Anatolia, responsible for more than 60% of Türkiye's red lentil production, received below-average rainfall during the critical February–April growing period. The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) cut its 2025 lentil crop estimate to 480,000 MT against the five-year average of 620,000 MT.
Favorable planting conditions reported in Saskatchewan, Canada, the world's largest red lentil exporter, will provide partial relief; however, the Canadian new crop will not reach the market until October 2025, keeping the supply squeeze window open through the third quarter.
Demand Side
India, the world's largest lentil consumer, has lifted import restrictions on Canadian and Turkish lentils, creating new demand at a time when supplies are tightening. Tenders opened by Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani buyers for third-quarter volumes are adding to the upward pressure.
